The Department of Dining Services is excited to announce an opening for a full-time Area Manager in its Retail Operations Area.  Under the general supervision of an Associate Director, this position assists in providing supervision and leadership in the Department of Dining Services retail food court operations located in the Student Union building on the Storrs Campus.  This is a full time, state, salaried position.

We are seeking a hands-on manager dedicated to providing experienced and quality food service in a large institutional setting.  The manager is primarily responsible for maintaining an efficient and effective food production service system and in ensuring safe and sanitary conditions, in accordance with applicable standards, laws, regulations and policies.  The manager will assist in hiring, as well as train, develop, schedule, evaluate and provide supervision over dining services assistant managers and the general kitchen labor force. This person also plans menus based on proper nutrition and knowledge of student acceptance, serving as in-house dietician that provides nutrition education for students.  Responsible for inventory control, the safe and sanitary storage of food and supplies, and troubleshooting equipment repairs and performs other related duties as required.  The manager maintains all appropriate fiscal and personnel records for the dining unit.  A successful manager will exhibit enthusiasm and lead by example and will be accessible to customers encouraging customer feedback and interaction.  The successful individual will be sensitive to and have an understanding of the diverse academic, socio-economic and cultural backgrounds of University personnel and students while establishing, maintaining, and fostering a positive working relationship with relative constituents.  The schedule is primarily a mid-afternoon to evening schedule, with some weekends as required.  However, this schedule may change based on the needs of the operation.

Minimum Qualifications:  Bachelor’s degree in food service field such as Foods and Nutrition, Institutional Management or equivalent combination of education and experience and one to three years of relevant experience.  Proven managerial and organizational ability; strong personnel and supervisory skills; experience leading and working with students and a diverse workforce; and knowledge of basic accounting principles.  Demonstrated knowledge of all aspects of a university dining services operation including expertise working with a computerized menu management system.  Candidate should have a proven track record of outstanding customer service, product ordering, and making financially sound business decisions.

Preferred Qualifications:  Registration as a Registered Dietician; two or more years of a culinary school or equivalent; catering experience in a high volume setting; knowledge of MICROS and Food Pro Menu Management computer software.

Salary:  The salary is commensurate with experience and qualifications.  Target salary is $49,000 to $54,000 annually.  Comprehensive benefit package that includes medical and dental insurance.
